I arrived at the airport around 7:15am. Using the kiosk, I printed my boarding pass. My previous flight from GDL – MEX made me a Delta Silver. So I was pleased to see that reflected on my boarding pass, which read SILVER ELITE. However, I was not pleased to see SSSS was printed on it:

I stayed just one night in Mexico City, so my priority was to be near the office which is located in the trendy Polanco area. Ultimately, I only spent about ~6 hours in the hotel. I got back to my room at 1am and left around 7am.

Booking

About 4 days before check-in, I booked a Standard King room for $175. If I were traveling for leisure, I would probably book an Airbnb instead.

For this stay, I earned 2,889 Hyatt points (889 base + 2,000 Q3 bonus).

After spending some time in the lounge, I headed to the gate where a bus was waiting to transport passengers to a remote stand. The gate agents announced boarding for Zone 1, so I had my ticket scanned and boarded the bus. Within minutes, someone came on the bus to inform us that our flight would be delayed and we all needed to get off the bus.

After about half an hour, the gate agents let the first 17 rows of the plane board the bus. We had a short drive to our plane, passing other Volaris and Interjet planes.

I had never travelled within Mexico, so I wasn’t sure what to expect with security lines. I decided to book a business class ticket which would give me access to priority lines. Turns out that was completely unnecessary, because security was a breeze.

I had about half an hour before boarding was supposed to begin, so I headed to the VIP Lounge (East) located near Gate 14. I accessed the lounge using my Priority Pass, and I was traveling with two of my coworkers, so I brought them in as well.

I didn’t have much time to explore Guadalajara, but I did eat lunch at Alcalde, which was recommended to us by our contact in GDL. Later I found out it’s one of the best restaurants in the city. You can see TripAdvisor reviews here and Yelp reviews here.

Alcalde is on OpenTable, so I was able to easily make a reservation for our group. Read More

Trip Report: 36 Hours in Mexico

  • Alaska 266 – Boeing 737
  • August 22, 2017
  • Depart: San Jose, CA 1:26pm
  • Arrive: Guadalajara, Mexico 7:05pm
  • Seat: 2F

I arrived at SJC at around 12:10pm. Since I was only traveling with a carry-on, I stopped at a kiosk to have my passport scanned.

I went upstairs to security, where the TSA precheck line was longer than both the normal and priority security lines. I went through the priority line, then went through a TSA precheck security lane. Even though I was stopped for “randomly selected screening”, the process took less than 10 minutes.

I headed to the gate where the plane was waiting.
